Coming Up: Help the Hooch 2020

Help the Hooch 2020

October is the scariest month of the year—and nothing is more frightening than the possibility of permanently polluting the Chattahoochee River. This landmark isn’t just a place where we can canoe, relax, and watch the wildlife. It’s also a natural resource that many of us rely on  to continue our way of life. Fortunately, Help the Hooch 2020 is coming up on October 3. Read on to learn more!

What is Help on the Hooch 2020?

Led by Columbus Water Works and Keep Columbus Beautiful, Help the Hooch partners with volunteers on an annual basis to remove litter from the Chattahoochee River. Year after year, their efforts have ensured that we can continue to enjoy this natural resource. Their hard work is also fundamental to our health, keeping the water clean, safe, and usable for all.

How has Help on the Hooch adjusted to COVID-19?

This year, they plan to have volunteers visit—and completely clean up—more than 20 spots. They will be taking precautions, such as social distancing, a safety webinar, and reducing the number of volunteers per location. COVID-19 guidelines also remind participants to wear masks and gloves, bring hand sanitizer, and stay six feet or further from those not in their households. Thank you for taking care of your community—in more ways than one!

How can participants help while still social distancing?

The organizers of Help the Hooch 2020 understand that right now, many of us are choosing to remain at home. They also want to flatten the curve! As a result, you can sign up for virtual participation.

After registering, people can use an app, Litterati, to mark where they find any litter. That way, someone else can ensure that the area gets cleaned properly. Make sure to use code HTH2020 throughout the month of October to take part!

How can I help?

Though the sign-up period ended on September 19, you can still help out this amazing initiative. Visit their page here to make a donation! You can also assist their cause, simply by doing your part to reduce, reuse, and recycle properly.
